A modular bench for self assemble, designed for children, in educational institutions.
Bench It Yourself

'Bench It Yourself', is a modular system that lets the young student experience the joy of creation from the first step of receiving the raw materials, through the step of planning and to the actual making and self building.

It's all been done in order to make a real product that later on, will be useful in school on a daily basis. Perhaps if we were taught as kids, that we can build our own useful objects, those objects would have greater sentimental value, and so, they would last longer. And that's Sustainability.
If YOU need to make what you use, then you will make ONLY what you need. Of course there are important educational values such as: learning and building process ; team work ; manual work with real materials ; the development of creative thinking. In addition, Since the students helped to create the benches themselves, not only that do not have the desire and the need to destroy them, but sometimes they will preserve them more than their personal belongings
The idea was to simplify the design as much as possible so that it is accessible and inviting to children to build simple products that will work in reality. Everything is solid wood square profile with varying lengths in any part, pre drilled holes on both sides of the profile to match the holes in the other parts, respectively, when what binds these are Dibble wood and glue. The benches were designed to be just wood because it transmit warmness and naturally. Beyond the desire to produce a bench that will not be expensive, there is a need to minimize the use of different and complicated technologies in order to save energy resources during the production processes. Transporting the parts in the trunk of the vehicle has helped direct their shape so that they will pile up in a sensible fashion.
The bench assembly is made by the students, with staff guidance, and takes about 3 days of activity. The team, of 2-3 trained instructors, comes to school in a van, which includes all the necessary equipment for the activity. The students first learn the work and assembly methods. Later, they are planning various benches in groups. And on the third step, the students paint and assemble the bench. At the end of the activity, the bench remains, for the use of the students at school and the staff returns to collect supplies and continues to the next school.
